One of the most important design elements in building any bird house is the hole size. The hole diameter will determine who or who cannot use your wren nest box. If you use the specifications outlined in these bird house plans, you will increase your chances of attracting wrens to use the nest box.

The house in 18th century style, had a modern colour palette, with the bold use of colours including Margaret's favourites, pink and kingfisher blue. Most birds are attracted to a natural-looking nest box and wood is an excellent choice.

Dark Colors Absorb More Heat

Save the bright colors for decorations and use natural wood tones for your wren abode. You may be wondering why the color of a wren house matters at all. Shouldn’t wrens just be looking for any cavity of the right size? It’s true that the size and shape of the entry hole and internal cavity are likely the most important factors that will determine if wrens find a nest box acceptable.

Turning everyday items into something new can be good for the environment and a lot of fun. With the Metal Coffee Can Wren House idea, you can change a regular coffee can into a home for wrens. Protecting your wrens from competitors can help ensure the house doesn’t get occupied by other birds. These plans come in different styles, so you can pick one that matches your taste and the materials you have. So grab your tools and some wood, and start building those wren houses. Wren house plans are a great way to connect with nature and give back to our environment.

The floor of your nesting box must be at least 3 inches below the entry hole. Ensuring ample space between the entrance hole and the base keeps the eggs nice and protected from predators. The best placement for nesting boxes is on a pole, along the side of your house, hanging from a tree branch or a fence.

John and Justin break in and Sadie beats them with a shower curtain rod, almost knocking them out until Emma shoots Sadie through her left eye, killing her. Krug hides, and attacks John and Justin when they search for him. Justin is stabbed by Krug, but with a combined effort from Emma and John, Krug is knocked unconscious. John, Emma, Mari, and Justin then leave in the boat for the hospital. Of the trio of Wes Craven remakes that surfaced in the 2000s, Dennis Iliadis' "The Last House on the Left" (2009) was arguably the most divisive among audiences and critics, and certainly the most controversial in its departure from the original.

So now my job as a film critic involved grading rape scenes. During a family vacation, teenagers Mari (Paxton) and Paige (MacIsaac) are viciously set about by a gang led by recent... They're surprisingly good, and I especially admired the work of Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn as the parents of one of two girls who go walking in the woods. It is no longer only the father who takes revenge; both parents work together, improvising, playing a deadly chess game in their own home, which they know better than the villains. We are only human, we identify with the parents, we fear for them, and we applaud their ingenuity. As they try to find the key to their boat so that they can take Mari to the hospital, Francis happens upon Mari.

The Last House on the Left is directed by Dennis Iliadis and adapted to screenplay by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth from the story by Wes Craven (co-producer here). A remake of Craven’s 1972 film of the same name (itself influenced by Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring), it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Sara Paxton, Spencer Treat Clark and Martha MacIsaac. This film, for example, which as I write has inspired only one review (by "Fright"), has generated a spirited online discussion about whether you can kill someone by sticking their head in a microwave.

Craven, who wrote and directed the original film, was interested to see what kind of film could be made on a larger budget, as the limited funds forced him to remove scenes he had wanted to film to tell a complete story. One of the elements Iliadis wanted to avoid with the film, given its graphic nature, was turning it into "torture porn". For Craven and Iliadis, the film primarily illustrates how even the most normal of families can be driven to commit evil acts if pushed too far. The film depicts the tragic and gruesome ends met by teens Mari Collingwood and Phyllis Stone, and the aftermath as Mari's parents take bloody revenge on those responsible for killing the girls.

A storm forces Krug, Francis, Sadie, and Justin to seek refuge at a nearby house. Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house. While this remake or Craven's 1972 classic is by no means watered down, it takes a different approach to the premise that allows it to stand on its own.

Storyline

last house on the left 2009

Many argue that a microwave won't operate with the door open. Others cite an early scene establishing that the microwave is "broken." The question of whether one should microwave a man's head never arises. Not many unseasoned audience members will find the 2009 rape scene "toned down," and indeed I found it painful to watch. In the 2005 film, it was so reprehensibly and lingeringly sadistic, I found it unforgivable.

I am uninterested in being "consistent." I approach the new film as simply a filmgoer. Other scenes, while violent, fell within the range of contemporary horror films, which strive to invent new ways to kill people, so the horror fans in the audience will get a laugh. The original script by Alleca included elements of supernatural horror, which prompted the studio to reject it and bring in Ellsworth for rewrites. Principal photography began in March 2008 in Cape Town and Helderberg Nature Reserve and concluded in May. The Last House on the Left was theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2009, and was a modest box office success, grossing $46 million against its $15 million budget.

Mari's survival gives the Last House on the Left a 'happy' ending

In 1972, he did not have the budget to film every piece of the story he wanted to tell. In Craven's utterly bleak original, everybody dies except Mari's parents, who are now faced with the rather harsh comedown from a joyous, blood-soaked orgy of violence not-so-far-removed from the one they are purportedly punishing. Even the wholesome, innocent Collingwoods are capable of such atrocities under the right circumstances. The audience experiences the same comedown, having been implicated to some degree by simply having watched the unfolding scenes. Many aspects of Iliadis' remake provoked a mixture of outrage and praise from critics, including its fusion of savage brutality with slick production values. But it was the ending of "The Last House on the Left," with its major departure from Craven's original vision, that really divided everyone who watched the film.

It is the one genre that can lead the box office without name stars, perhaps because its fans know that big stars very rarely appear in one (I'm not thinking of films where story is first, but those in which graphic violence is first). The Last House on the Left is a 2009 revenge horror thriller film directed by Dennis Iliadis and written by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth. A remake of the 1972 film of the same name, it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Aaron Paul, Spencer Treat Clark, Riki Lindhome, Martha MacIsaac, and Sara Paxton. The film follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and left for dead by a family of violent fugitives. When her parents learn what was done to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their summer home during a thunderstorm.

The 2009 remake of "The Last House on the Left" was directed by Dennis Iliadis and produced by Wes Craven himself under his Midnight Pictures production company label. For the most part, the remake — starring Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Sara Paxton, and Martha MacIsaac — remains faithful to the plot and tone of the original. Mari (Paxton) and her friend Paige (MacIsaac) are kidnapped, sexually assaulted, tortured, and left for dead by Krug (Dillahunt) and his gang. When Krug's gang unwittingly takes refuge in the titular house, Mari's parents John (Goldwyn) and Emma (Potter) discover what was done to their daughter and wreak equally brutal vengeance.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, with several deeming it worthy of praise in comparison to other horror films and remakes in general, while others considered it inferior to the original. And such a church was built in the 1300s and still stands at Karna in Sweden. No churches will be built because of the other films, no parents will ask forgiveness and few members of the audience will think they should. These films are in the horror genre, which once tried to scare the audience, but now invites the audience to share the fear and pain of the characters.

It is also true that director and Dennis Iliadis and his cinematographer Sharone Meir do a smooth job of handling space and time to create suspense. The film is an effective representative of its genre, and horror fans will like it, I think, but who knows? I'm giving it a 2.5 in the silly star rating system and throwing up my hands. By the end of Craven's 1972 original, both Mari and Phyllis have been ruthlessly tortured and slaughtered. The last we see of Mari, she stumbles into the lake and is fatally shot in the back by Krug.

The major departure in the 2009 remake comes in its ending, when we discover that Mari survived being shot and left for dead in the lake, and has made her way back home. Mari's parents find her on the porch and proceed to take revenge on her attackers in brutal and gory ways that would have likely satisfied Craven, and the surviving family boats across the lake to take Mari to a hospital. The rights to The Last House on the Left were picked up by Rogue Pictures in 2006, with the remake being the first film produced by Craven's newly formed studio Midnight Pictures.

Thirty-seven years ago, Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left was groundbreaking in its use of sadistic violence. It’s well shot, well edited, the effects are stellar, the performances are solid, but it is a brutal film (for better or for worse) that not all will want to watch. Later, John returns to the cabin, where he has paralyzed Krug from the neck down. John places Krug's head in a microwave jury-rigged to operate even with the door open. As John walks away, Krug's head explodes, ultimately killing him.

When athletic teen Mari Collingwood opts to hang out with her friend Paige in town rather than spend an evening in with her parents vacationing at the family's remote lake house, it marks the beginning of a night no one is going to forget. There is also sound work by Krug (Garret Dillahunt), the convincingly evil leader of a pack of degenerates. And Sara Paxton, who has been acting since 8 and was 20 when the movie was made, shows, as so many sexy young blonds do, that they are better than the bubblehead roles they are mostly given. In August 2006, Rogue Pictures finalized a deal to remake The Last House on the Left (1972) with original writer and director Wes Craven as a producer.

United States House Committee on Appropriations Wikipedia

house appropriations committee

The committee tends to be less partisan than other committees or the House overall. While the minority party will offer amendments during committee consideration, appropriations bills often get significant bipartisan support, both in committee and on the House floor. This atmosphere can be attributed to the fact that all committee members have a compelling interest in ensuring legislation will contain money for their own districts. Conversely, because members of this committee can easily steer money to their home districts, it is considered very difficult to unseat a member of this committee at an election—especially if he or she is a "Cardinal". The Appropriations committee is widely recognized by political scientists as one of the "power committees",[citation needed] since it holds the power of the purse.

COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN

Another important development for Appropriations occurred in the presidency of Warren G. Harding. Harding was the first president of the United States to deliver a budget proposal to Congress. At the time of creation the membership of the committee stood at nine; it currently has 61 members.[2] The power of the committee has only grown since its founding; many of its members and chairmen have gone on to even higher posts.

Members, 118th Congress

It was also becoming clear that there was little, if any coordination between raising and spending revenues.Additionally, there was a feeling among some Members of Congress that there needed to be other or additional ways to change the priorities of Federal spending. Since the House is elected from single-member districts, securing financing for projects in the district can help a member to be reelected as the funds can create jobs and raise economic performance. This type of spending is derided by critics as pork barrel spending, while those who engage in it generally defend it as necessary and appropriate expenditure of government funds.

Numerous court cases were filed by outraged interest groups and members of Congress. Eventually, the sense that Congress needed to regain control of the budget process led to the adoption of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974, which finalized the budget process in its current form. As such, it is one of the most powerful committees, and its members are seen as influential. Thirty-five Members of Congress have served as chairman of the Committee on Appropriations. The Honorable Clarence Cannon of Missouri, served as chairman nearly 19 years, although his term as chairman was of broken continuity.

The Honorable George Mahon of Texas, served as chairman continuously longer than any other person, from May 18, 1964 to January 3, 1979. Three, Samuel Randall of Pennsylvania, Joseph Cannon of Illinois, and Joseph Byrns of Tennessee, became Speaker of the House. Interesting biographical sketches of 21 of the men are contained in House Document No. 299 of the 77th Congress. The new Committee on Appropriations - seven Republicans and two Democrats - was appointed on December 11, 1865, in the 1st session of the 39th Congress, and first reported the general appropriations bills for the fiscal year 1867.

Openings on the Appropriations committee are often hotly demanded, and are doled out as rewards. It is one of the "exclusive" committees of the House, meaning its members typically sit on no other committee. Under House Rules, an exception to this is that five Members of the Appropriations Committee must serve on the House Budget Committee—three for the majority and two for the minority. Much of the power of the committee comes from the inherent utility of controlling spending. Its subcommittee chairs are often called "Cardinals", likening them to the most senior members of the Catholic Church, because of the power they wield over the budget. President Richard Nixon began "impounding" funds, not allowing them to be spent, even when Congress had specifically appropriated money for a cause.

Appropriations Committees Release Second FY24 Package

The members of the Appropriations committee can do this better than most, and better direct funding towards another member's district, increasing the stature of committee members in the House and helping them gain support for their priorities, including seeking leadership positions or other honors. The root of the Appropriations Committee's power is its ability to disburse funds, and thus as the United States federal budget has risen, so has the power of the Appropriations Committee. The first federal budget of the United States, in 1789, was for $639,000—a hefty sum for the time, but a much smaller amount relative to the economy than the federal budget would later become. By the time the Appropriations committee was founded, the Civil War and inflation had raised expenditures to roughly $1.3 billion, increasing the clout of Appropriations. Expenditures continued to follow this pattern—rising sharply during wars before settling down—for over 100 years.

Four of them—Samuel Randall (D-PA), Joseph Cannon (R-IL), Joseph Byrns (D-TN) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)—have gone on to become the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; one, James Garfield, has gone on to become President of the United States. The new structure added the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, and transferred jurisdiction over Legislative Branch appropriations from the full committee to a newly reinstated Legislative Branch Subcommittee, which had not existed since the 108th Congress. By the early 1970s, new forces were at work calling for changes in the way in which Congress handled the budget and appropriations process. One of the most compelling of these forces, although it was largely a temporary problem, was due to the "impoundment" of funds in fiscal year 1974 by the President. This was, in effect, a line item veto of funds for programs that were initiated or increased by the Congress. Many Members of Congress and certain special interest groups were outraged and extremely frustrated by the impoundments. Numerous court suits on various impoundments had been filed and were in the process of being heard.A more serious reason for budget reform was due to the widely held belief that the budget was out of control. Deficits were mounting; so-called "uncontrollable" spending was climbing; and "back door" spending, i.e. spending provided other than through the Appropriations Committee, was increasing.

It was changed that year to 35 and gradually increased to 50 by 1951. Until recently, the Committee numbered 66 members, but has since reduced its ranks to 53 members. The Committee on Appropriations was created on December 11, 1865, when the U.S. House of Representatives separated the tasks of the Committee on Ways and Means into three parts.[2] The passage of legislation affecting taxes remained with Ways and Means. The power to regulate banking was transferred to the Committee on Banking and Commerce. The power to appropriate money—to control the federal purse strings—was given to the newly created Appropriations Committee.

I am pleased to provide additional information for the Fiscal Year 2025 House appropriations process.

Deficits were mounting; so-called "uncontrollable" spending was climbing; and "back door" spending, i.e. spending provided other than through the Appropriations Committee, was increasing.

house appropriations committee

Jeffery's understanding of the criminal mind from his study in rehabilitative facilities over forty years ago was now being used to reduce crime in those same type of facilities. Woodbridge showed how prison design allowed offending to continue and introduced changes to reduce crime. In summary, CPTED focuses on the natural crime prevention strategies which good design can account for. Mechanical and labour-intensive ‘bolt-on’ strategies are only added as a last resort when other options are exhausted. Oscar Newman coined the expression "defensible space" as a term for a range of mechanisms, real and symbolic barriers, strongly defined areas of influence, and improved opportunities for surveillance that combine to bring the environment under the control of its residents.

Natural access control

The City’s Information Technology Agency in 1997 completed a landmark video on this subject, probably the first comprehensive video produced anywhere explaining CPTED principles. A 15-minute version of this Design Out Crime videotape is targeted at community and neighborhood watch groups interested in applying these techniques in their homes and small businesses. A second, 30-minute version of this videotape, hosted by actress Joanna Cassidy, demonstrates more detailed techniques for use in new development projects by architects, developers, real estate professionals, and urban planners. A collaborative relationship between the problem owner and broader stakeholders is formed (Paton and Dorst, 2011) in the exploration of the problem.

Management and Maintenance

Anti-theft measures like these erode customers’ spirits and our social fabric, even though it’s unclear whether shoplifting has become the national crisis some claim. Another large encampment near Halliday's home was cleared in early January after Park and the mayor teamed up to get people into interim housing. Park, who also lives in Venice, said the neighborhood has since seen a 63% drop in violent crime since that roughly 80-person encampment was dismantled. The area includes downtown's infamous "Skid Row," a 54-block area where many of L.A.'s unhoused population lives in tents near community resources geared toward them.

CPTED uses architecture, urban planning, and facility management and it is sometimes termed Design out Crime (DOC), Defensible Space or Crime Prevention Through Urban Development (CPT-UD). It also addresses the social environment by building a sense of community in areas thereby reducing the motivations for crime. This distinction between crime opportunity and crime motive is where CPTED divides into First and Second Generation (that history is described below).

Territorial Enforcement

ASSA ABLOY Future Lab a leader in global solutions in the area of integration and mechanical and electronic security solutions featured CPTED Security in their Crime Prevention feature article. Examples of such unfriendly architecture include the use of metal studs or bolts to break up smooth surfaces to discourage skateboarders. Cities and Counties throughout the country are adopting CPTED ordinances requiring site plan reviews with crime prevention in mind. Law enforcement officers who are specially trained in CPTED are now working closely with Planners, Architects, City Officials, and Educators to ensure the proper design of structures, schools, and neighborhoods.

Achievements of the ProgramThe Design Out Crime program has already changed City government’s organizational culture in reviewing development projects. Multiple agencies now work cooperatively to assure that new development projects and public spaces are designed to maximize their safety. Because the City Council has given its official stamp of approval to a set of CPTED principles, the City’s leadership has effectively institutionalized this way of thinking into City government. For example, “activity support” encourages bringing intended users to a space to make it less hospitable to criminal activity.

The National Institute of Crime Prevention

1) Access Control — Using the layout of your environmental design to physically limit the access and egress points. This practice can also guide users, both positive and negative, to a specific direction within the park. Controlling access makes negative users feel uncomfortable and less apt to commit a crime. With a crime rate of 36 per one thousand residents, Los Angeles has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and Community Policing

Within California, more than 91% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Los Angeles. Some neighborhoods experienced what at first appears to be a steep rise in violent crime, but a closer look tells a different story. For instance, the data shows violent crime soared 114% from 2019 to 2022 in the 5,500-resident Westside neighborhood of Rancho Park, but that was the result of the number of these episodes rising from seven to 15.

Popular Communities Near Los Angeles CA

The activity of visualising scenarios, as demonstrated in the paper, is a common design tool that allows participants to envisage and debate a future that is safer and more liveable, in turn permitting the emergence of solutions that have a positive impact. This special issue concludes with two articles that are perhaps good examples of design for crime prevention, giving case studies of design approaches to crime problems. The first, by Adam Thorpe and Lorraine Gamman, illustrates a case study of a crime prevention initiative delivered in a neighbourhood of Seoul in South Korea. It illustrates how solutions to crime problems have been developed and implemented with and by communities rather than for them, using a social innovation approach with design at the forefront. This ‘participatory’ approach to crime prevention and community safety has parallels with participatory design processes (Schuler and Namioka, 1993) and much in common with an ‘open innovation approach’ (Thorpe et al, 2010).

She also suggested that mixed land uses and other elements of community-building and participation creates a sense of community and enhances the “unconscious network of informal social controls” existing to control crime. Why would you wait for a crime to occur if you have the means to prevent it from happening? Law enforcement agencies often spend too much time and resources on reactionary practices regarding crime instead of implementing preventative measures. Crime prevention strategies and community policing are evolving concepts that need to be applied by law enforcement agencies and park systems nationwide.

CPTED is a crucial element of the service that Design for Security provide, and the benefits are optimal when the strategy is applied in the earliest possible stage of the design process, before integral design decisions are set in stone. CPTED however, should not operate alone as the sole crime prevention method; and instead should work in conjunction with other social, environmental and community-based strategies. CPTED is not a stand-alone answer to preventing neighborhood crime, however it does outline social, policy, and planning interventions that can bring together planning and public health professionals to create safe and healthy communities and public spaces in our neighborhoods.

In this case, environmental design is defined as physical design and immediate situational factors such as site design, territorial boundaries, the number of people using or observing the space, the purpose of their use, temporal factors, and disorder. It does not include broader socio-cultural factors such as poverty level, racial and gender inequality, family structure, criminal laws, and exposure to violence. Crime Prevention Through Environmental design, also known as CPTED, is a strategy that brings together community members to examine how an area’s physical design can influence human behavior, reduce crime, fear of crime, and improve quality of life.

This is why the ICA has been professionalizing the field of CPTED through education, research, certification, and instituting a CPTED Code of Ethics with all its members. An existing design process (to create an environment, object, policy, system and so on) is being undertaken. Julia Ryan is the Director of LISC’s Community Safety Initiative, where for the last 10 years she has helped communities integrate CPTED principles into their crime prevention strategies. In 2012 Woodbridge introduced and developed the concept of CPTED within a prison environment, a place where crime still continues after conviction.

A main objective of CPTED is to reduce/remove the opportunity for crime to occur in an environment, and promote positive interaction with the space by legitimate users. In this setting, users develop a sense of territorial control, while potential offenders perceive this control and are discouraged from their criminal intentions. Territorial reinforcement is promoted by features that define property lines and distinguish private spaces from public spaces, such as landscape plantings, pavement design, gateway treatments, and fences. Natural access control involves decreasing opportunities for crime by denying access to crime targets and creating a perception of risk in offenders. It is accomplished by designing streets, sidewalks, entrances, and neighborhood gateways to mark public routes, and by using structural elements to discourage access to private areas. Depending on the position and use, physical barriers in public spaces such as tall dense bushes, buildings, tall fences, and recesses can inhibit views of public spaces like intersections, streets, playgrounds, and parks.

An environmental crime-prevention strategy which seeks to prevent residential crime through the solution of urban design and physical environmental modifications. In addition to the elements listed above, this section provides additional design elements for specific types of properties. The categorization of properties is intended to organize the suggested elements by where they are most likely applicable.

Outside of downtown, some of the largest increases in crime rates were on L.A.'s Westside, with greater wealth and home to many national chain and high-end retailers. Neighborhoods including Century City, Palms, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista and Sawtelle all saw overall crime rates increase dramatically between 2018 and 2022. Downtown L.A.'s crime rate was more than six times the citywide rate and triple other L.A. Easy to ReplicateThe Design Out Crime program offers techniques that are not building- or territory-specific, so the program can be easily replicated to fit nearly any neighborhood or city. While the videotape uses Los Angeles-area examples, the principles it illustrates can apply to any City, which is why the City has already received numerous requests for the video from around the nation. How it WorksIn these tight fiscal times, cities must look beyond traditional policing methods and examine all possible ways to enhance public safety.

You might be surprised to learn that this purple-happy townhome is one of many San Francisco houses doused in varying renditions of this electrically violaceous hue. Something about that California sunshine drives people to joyful repose that is thus demonstrated in an unforgettable streetside display. Take a note from the pages of this brazen homeowner and incorporate high-contrast hues of pastel and neon.

If you’re looking for neon and bold, try Barbie Dreamhouse Purple and Porsche Ruby Star by Backdrop Home for similar tones. Bold colors can add a contemporary vibe to historic homes in a fun way. Take, for example, the ultramarine blue trim (like Glidden Premium’s Brilliant Blue) on this shingled Nantucket house, which gives it an edgy vibe without departing too heavily from the spirit of the house. As it turns out, giving your house a color refresh can do more than impress your neighbors.

Orange is another color that gives that feeling of sunshine and warmth.

You don't even have to go with black — this rich dark door and almost black shutters look classy. Unless you're a vampire, black may not be the first color you lean to when it comes to painting your home's exterior. However, this back house has a classic look that makes it more inviting than scary. This deep blue almost has a purple tone to it in the right light, and pairs well with the gray stone accents and roof. A hue similar to the red found on barns may not be a color that first pops in your mind when it comes to painting your home.

A Garden from Scratch: How to Start Designing Your Outdoor Space

Many people equate contemporary homes with a limited exterior color scheme. But modern-style homes offer inspiration for a diverse way to showcase color and pattern, even if the palette is pretty neutral. If you're building new or remodeling your exterior, consider all the shapes and sizes of brick to create an accent feature rather than relying solely on paint for adding color. Here, the pattern on the brick section of the front facade is nearly mosaic-like. Functional features, such as drain pipes or front steps, can be a wonderful way to include different colors or materials. Instead of mixing a variety of different colors, create contrast by using two different shades of the same paint color.

Garden Design 101

An all-neutral palette looks particularly polished when accented with hits of black. Try painting the shutters and front door black to give your beige exterior a more sophisticated feel. Use white on the trim and other exterior elements so the look is crisp and clean instead of one-note. Because it typically covers the most surface area, siding will often provide the foundation for your exterior color scheme. Consider the undertones of your siding color, and choose two or three other shades that complement the hue.

Here, the first impulse might be to paint the section of the front facade above the door line the same color as the bottom half. Instead, the natural wood, which will weather to a warm gray if left unstained, adds warmth to the gray-green paint. When it comes to exterior color schemes, there's something to be said for tried-and-true combinations. This classic home might look out of place with any palette other than warm beige for the siding and bright white around windows and on rails.

That’s exactly why Cortney and Robert Novogratz used the shade to revive the exterior of their five-story Art Nouveau building in New York City. It’s much more energizing than the original bubblegum pink exterior. This is a scenario when it really pays to take your time and be hands-on.

A bright white base with seafoam blue accents is a tried-and-true color combination. It’s especially ideal for a waterfront property or beach cottage like this Florida home by designer Ashley Gilbreath as it plays into the coastal environment. At the end of the day, as long as you anchor your house with a few key paint colors, you’ll have flexibility to maintain a cohesive color scheme even with some outliers. Allow your home to harmonize with the greenery that surrounds it by creating a jade and olive color scheme, as HGTV stars Ben and Erin Napier did for this Laurel, Mississippi, home. The siding is painted in Rookwood Jade and the porch flooring is in Renwick Olive, both by Sherwin-Williams, to reflect the natural landscape.

Pick a shade of white with undertones that match the rest of your exterior color scheme. On this home, white siding with blue undertones melds gracefully with a bright blue front door, powder-blue porch furniture, and pendant light. Each color in the trio is distinct, but their commonalities create perfect harmony. Go with a tried and true exterior design and complement white siding with navy blue and cherry red accents. If you’re displaying a flag outside, this is a particularly fitting color scheme that complements the stars and stripes perfectly.

Benjamin Moore Paint Store in Rhode Island

Then add subtle contrast with a distinct black, as designer Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey did for her Texas home by painting the windows and doors in Jet Black by Benjamin Moore. The former parsonage's terra-cotta details and surrounding greenery complete the inviting scene. Be wary of factory-white windows, as the ultrastark hue can create dissonance, especially when paired with a warmer off-white window trim. “While not always the rule, I like the trim and the mullions to be the same color, which further promotes a cohesive feeling,” Parker says. Matching trim to wall color also helps with the transition, especially when you use a high-quality paint.

White With Black Accents

Then, to give the front of the home a modern, more organic touch, assemble a collection of potted plants by the front door that liven up the neutral exterior, add height, and boost curb appeal. Steely gray can be a sterile choice for exterior color schemes when used by itself. But if this cool-minded hue tops your preferred color list, consider warming it up. That can be done in several ways, such as a bright accent color like a warmer orange. A contrasting material, such as wood, can also be a good choice, particularly when stained a medium to dark color. In this contemporary scheme, a rich gray provides a good bridge between the two hues.

Garden Design 101

Each guest is welcomed at the front door by colorful shutters, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green. This 123-year-old Victorian in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood didn’t necessarily need a color wash to make a statement. The homeowners gave it a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White, which happily contrasts with the front door’s sultry pop of green (Benjamin Moore’s Rainforest Foliage). Redd says he’s a fan of colorful front doors (he has a pale blue door, himself), which can add a spot of color without the risk of a house-wide color wash gone wrong.

New Products

If you’re nervous that it’s too bold of a color for your neighborhood, cool it down with white accents. “Gray is a great neutral that can match just about any style of home and is a beautiful complement to brick,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “The slightly more saturated shutters and door provide a sophisticated accent and bring in the tones of sky and sea.” Seen here are Sherwin-Williams’s Comfort Gray (SW 6205) and Rain (SW 6219). “Color can make a big impact on the look of a house,” confirms architect Jim Rill, principal of Rill Architects, in Bethesda, Maryland. For inspiration, consider your home’s style and scale as well as architectural styles typical of your neighborhood and region.

Materials used on a home's exterior often supply a built-in base for a color scheme. This limestone facade offers a base that's in tune with both the home's architecture and the natural landscape. To keep the color scheme low-key and minimalist, shutters and windows were painted a neutral yellow shade that nearly blends in with the stonework. For a bit of warmth and as an accent, a medium-tone stain warms the front door. Complement beige trim and natural stonework with warm shades of green. Hunter-green shutters and shake shingles stand out against this home's soft sage-green siding.

This modern exterior features a charcoal gray paint color on the bottom and a lighter gray on the top half of the structure, with crisp white trim brightening the two and unifying the facade. To ensure a visible contrast and a depth change, use tones at least two shades apart. Update an old brick exterior with a fresh coat of white paint and create crisp contrast with a taupe-painted front door and window shutters.

However, as you can see, it makes this house stand out in a sea of plain whites, grays, and pale blues. Bring a fairy-tale-like cottage in the woods to life through dovetail gray siding and glacial green accents. Artist Frances Schultz’s Bee Cottage in East Hampton, New York, is a prime example. The dark brown front door and landscaping (especially over the doorway!) enhance the dreamy locale. “I like my rooms to talk to one another, and a neutral can be the conversation facilitator,” McBournie says.

If the exterior of your home is looking a little dated, what better way to refresh it than selecting a clean modern paint color? The outside of your home makes an important first impression, so you'll want to think through your decision carefully. With so many colors to choose from, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed as you begin to explore options.

What Is CPTED and How Can It Help Your Community? Working with BJA NTTAC

crime prevention design

Residents in new affordable housing projects will be living in complexes that will stay safe over the long haul. Public parks and other public spaces will become vibrant centers of activity rather than forbidding “no man’s lands”. Small businesses, such as convenience stores, will become safer for patrons and employees alike. By making all City agencies, not just police departments, accountable for fighting crime, the Design Out Crime initiative also addresses the fractured nature of public safety efforts in major cities. By bringing together departments to work cooperatively on the guidelines and their implementation, it has induced a shift in the City’s organizational culture.

new developments in such a way where the opportunity for crime is reduced,

Protection of these assets is a concern and should be considered throughout the design and construction process. For multi-family developments, elements such as drain pipes, parapets and ledges should not be located near windows, corridors or balconies. If unavoidable, they should face parking lots, children’s playground or roads to allow for natural surveillance. Another method is to build houses, streets, transport hubs and retail settings in a way that promotes visibility. This can include making windows and entrances of buildings face each other and clever use of lighting.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and Community Policing

crime prevention design

Additionally, these objectives can be achieved by assignment of space to designated users in previously unassigned locations. Natural surveillance increases the perceived risk of attempting deviant actions by improving visibility of potential offenders to the general public. Natural surveillance occurs by designing the placement of physical features, activities and people in such a way as to maximize visibility of the space and its users, fostering positive social interaction among legitimate users of private and public space. Potential offenders feel increased scrutiny, and thus inherently perceive an increase in risk. This perceived increase in risk extends to the perceived lack of viable and covert escape routes. ‘Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design’ (CPTED) is a crime prevention theory focusing on tactical design and the effective use of the built environment, which when applied, reduces both crime and the fear of crime.

Strategies

CPTED principles advocate for the integration of design elements combined with activities that create an environment where informal natural surveillance occurs more easily. This is also referred to as the “eyes of the street” concept that safe spaces are nurtured when the community has the opportunity and an underlying investment to observe, intervene and/or report potential crime to ensure a safe public space. Until the Design Out Crime initiative began, few City staff members and private developers gave much thought to the public safety implications of development projects.

As of 2004[update], CPTED is popularly understood to refer strictly to the Newman/Crowe type models, with the Jeffery model treated more as multi-disciplinary approach to crime prevention which incorporates biology and psychology, a situation accepted even by Jeffery himself. A revision of CPTED, initiated in 1997, termed 2nd Generation CPTED, adapts CPTED to offender individuality, further indication that Jeffery's work is not popularly considered to be already a part of CPTED. In 2012 Woodbridge introduced and developed CPTED in prison and showed how design flaws allowed criminals to keep offending. WBDG is a gateway to up-to-date information on integrated 'whole building' design techniques and technologies. The goal of 'Whole Building' Design is to create a successful high-performance building by applying an integrated design and team approach to the project during the planning and programming phases. Putting together a CPTED plan involves a variety of departments (marketing, planning and design, maintenance, media relations, executives, etc.) and each specific principle of design will show individually how much the practice can benefit you and your organization.

The problems are apparent around Los Angeles and most major cities; decaying public housing projects, abandoned public spaces, unsafe convenience stores, and even burglarized single-family homes. Cities may ameliorate all of these conditions through careful attention to CPTED principles. Image/maintenance and activity support provide the community with reassurance and the ability to inhibit crime by citizen activities.

Effectiveness and criticism

New concepts in the geography of crime, known as environmental criminology (Brantingham & Brantingham, 1981), were added to CPTED such as activity generators, crime displacement, and movement predictors. Social descriptions of citizen participation and strengthening community supports were replaced with spatial descriptions of urban locations thereby shifting focus from the residents of an area to offender decision-making. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED, pronounced sep-ted) is a multidisciplinary approach to deterring criminal behavior that focuses on changing how places are laid out, and how they look and feel. Criminologist C. Ray Jeffrey coined the term in the 1970s around the same time that architect Oscar Newman’s ideas about “defensible space” took hold. The phrase began to gain acceptance after the publication of his 1971 book of the same name.

An often overlooked contribution of Jeffery in his 1971 book is outlining four critical factors in crime prevention that have stood the test of time. These are the degrees to which one can manipulate the opportunity for a crime to occur, the motivation for the crime to occur, the risk to the offender if the crime occurs, and the history of the offender who might consider committing the crime. The first three of these are within the control of the potential victim while the last is not. 4) Maintenance and Management — Keeping areas “clean and green” is the minimum standard for scheduled maintenance. Do not let things like graffiti, garbage and/or damaged property be seen by your positive users. Activity Support — Probably the biggest advocate, especially to a parks system, is the amount of space you have to add positive actors to your park.

In front yards, use waist-level, picket-type fencing along residential property lines can help control access and encourage surveillance. Use shoulder-level, open-type fencing along lateral residential property lines between side yards and extending to between back yards. They should be sufficiently clear of landscaping to promote social interaction between neighbors. Poorly defined front and rear yards could be defined by a small fence or by regular maintenance of the surrounding landscape.

For less than half the cost of one police officer for one year, the City has developed ground-breaking crime prevention work of enduring value. These City of Los Angeles General Funds are the only monies allocated to the program thus far. By 2004[update], elements of the CPTED approach had gained wide international acceptance due to law enforcement efforts to embrace it. The CPTED term "environment" is commonly used to refer to the external environment of the place. Jeffery's intention that CPTED also embrace the internal environment of the offender seems to have been lost, even on those promoting the expansion of CPTED to include social ecology and psychology under the banner of 2nd Generation CPTED. Wide-ranging recommendations to architects include the planting of trees and shrubs, the elimination of escape routes, the correct use of lighting, and the encouragement of pedestrian and bicycle traffic in streets.

These social and physical dimensions still exist in the CPTED movement today, although there is debate whether “target hardening” belongs within CPTED or within technical security, since the term seldom appears in any of the original writing of the CPTED pioneers. The second paper by Selby Coxon, Robbie Napper and Arthur De Bono gives an example of design with crime prevention. The research focuses on encouraging positive passenger behaviours rather than responding to negative criminal intent, and shows how manipulating the design of the environment can provoke desired changes in behaviour (Cornish and Clarke, 2003). The research also demonstrates the value in bringing design and crime together in a collaborative approach using a design methodology to provide inventive and relevant solutions to anti-social behaviour.

The enhanced visibility this creates is known as “passive surveillance”, which can deter some offenders. Los Angeles City Councilmember Laura Chick in 1995 created an inter-agency “Design Out Crime” task force, led by representatives of the City Planning Department and Police Department, but including eight City agencies. The task force developed a set of “Design Out Crime” guidelines, adopted officially by the City Council, for distribution to developers, architects, urban planners and others involved in the design of building projects. The guidelines are also used by City agencies, such as the Housing Department, as criteria in evaluating projects worthy of City funding.

Through the dissemination of the video and the application of simple, inexpensive techniques, the initiative gives community residents and small business owners concrete steps they can take to reduce crime. An existing crime problem is approached through a crime prevention framework such as problem-oriented policing (Scott and Kirby, 2012) to design a response to the problem. The problem is approached with a view to creating crime prevention values to counteract offending opportunity. Elements of the environment, object, policy, system and so on are changed to achieve the desired crime prevention outcomes (see, for example, Scott and Dedel, 2009). Territorial reinforcement measures make the normal user feel safe and make the potential offender aware of a substantial risk of apprehension or scrutiny.

If police expertise is engaged in the design and planning process and the principles of CPTED applied, opportunities for crime and disorder, and consequent calls for service, are reduced and safer communities are created. A Times analysis from 2022 found that stores in higher-income areas locked up fewer items even in places where property crime rates were higher, creating an additional burden for shoppers in certain neighborhoods. And inconsistencies in how locked merchandise is released to customers — sometimes workers hand you items to put in your cart, other times they escort merchandise to the register — raise the same questions of racial profiling that have long plagued retail establishments.

Tests show that the application of CPTED measures overwhelmingly reduces criminal activity. The most efficient, least expensive way to provide security is during the design process. Designers who are called on to address security and crime concerns must be able to determine security requirements, must know security technology, and must understand the architectural implications of security needs. 3) Territorial Reinforcement — This concept involves facilitating the process of turning an area over to legitimate users who will take ownership of the space and care for it. This helps eliminate or reduce nuisance behaviors because bad actors using the space receive increased monitoring.

Having a positive image in the community shows a sense of pride and self-worth that no one can take away from the owner of the property. Natural access control limits the opportunity for crime by taking steps to clearly differentiate between public space and private space. By selectively placing entrances and exits, fencing, lighting and landscape to limit access or control flow, natural access control occurs. During this period Sorensen worked with Ronald V. Clarke and the Sparta team to develop a new CPTED Curriculum that used Situational Crime Prevention as an underlying theoretical basis for CPTED measures. A curriculum was developed and trained to stakeholders in public and assisted housing, and follow-up CPTED assessments were conducted at various sites. The Sparta-led CPTED projects showed statistical reductions in self reported FBI UCR Part I crimes between 17% and 76% depending on the basket of CPTED measures employed in specific high crime, low income settings in the United States.

As such, the design features, public areas and venue names are inspired by the metropolitan U.S. city. These include an imposing three-metre-high replica of the Statue of Liberty at the heart of the casino and a newly designed expansive retail and entertainment area, aptly named Times Square. The main feature of this new area is an impressive 8.5 metre-high LED wall spanning four decks with a projection of the iconic skyline of this entertainment hub in Manhattan that can change from day to night. There also are sushi bars on more than half the line's ships, with varying names like Kaito Sushi and Galaxy Sushi. On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites. MSC Seashore has five specialty restaurants that feature waterfront, outdoor seating on the ship's boardwalk.

For the summer of 2025, both MSC World America and Icon of the Seas will sail from Miami on Saturdays on seven-night trips to the Caribbean. Carnival Celebration will sail out of Miami on Sundays on six- to eight-night trips to the Caribbean. MSC has always emphasized the "Mediterranean way of life" tag for its ships, but Meraviglia marks a move away from strictly that with some international (North American) concessions. Everything is in English (signage, first language, announcements), and there is an American steakhouse. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.

Masters of the Sea

Each of the Musica Class ships holds a bit over 2,500 passengers at double occupancy (around 3,200 with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers you'll find on the biggest MSC Cruises ships. Not sure that you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? All of the ships also have a giant pool deck, a water park and a sprawling amusement area with race car simulators, a flight simulator and an XD cinema. Until late 2022, these were the biggest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet, and they're still giant by any standard. If you're a fan of big, bustling resorts that are loaded with all sorts of amusements, they should be on your short list among MSC Cruises vessels, along with the World Class ships.

MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape are slightly bigger versions of the first two ships in the series that are part of a subclass called Seaside EVO (EVO stands for "evolution"). They each can hold 4,540 passengers at double occupancy (5,877 with every berth filled). The four vessels in MSC Cruises' Seaside Class feature layouts with lots of outdoor spaces for sunning, strolling and bar-hopping. Drinking spots include a two-deck English-style pub dubbed Masters of the Sea Pub, which serves beer made on board.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships offer vacationers a ton of options for dining (some vessels have more than a dozen distinct places to eat dinner or at least grab a quick bite) or entertainment. Together, the 14 World, Meraviglia, Seaside and Fantasia Class vessels make up MSC Cruises' big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are considerably smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at 2,700 to 3,200 passengers. The grande dame of the MSC Cruises fleet is its recently unveiled MSC World Europa. At 215,863 tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the first of a new series of so-called World Class vessels that are nearly as big as Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships.

What new MSC Cruises ships are coming?

The vessels also often sail voyages in the Mediterranean that are longer than the seven-night trips that are the norm at MSC Cruises. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions. You'll also find two pool areas on each of the ships, whirlpools, a miniature golf course and a sports court. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino and multiple bars and lounges.

Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. MSC World America is slated to sail her maiden voyage, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise on April 12, 2025, calling at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas.

In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami, but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too. The line also offers cruises from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in a major development, the line opened its first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, in the Bahamas in 2019. Both ships have been designed around a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars. Scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025, MSC World America will be the world's seventh-biggest cruise ship when it debuts and the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever deployed to North America. Unveiled in January, Icon of the Seas is the world's biggest cruise ship.
